Benchmark the existing website
Before design work begins, record organic landing pages, important search queries, backlinks, conversions and indexed URLs. Export data from Google Search Console and analytics, crawl the current site and preserve a copy of its metadata and content. This benchmark shows what already works and provides a reference after launch.
Keep valuable URLs whenever practical
A new design does not require a completely new URL structure. Retaining concise, established addresses reduces migration risk. When a URL genuinely needs to change, map it to the most relevant new page with a permanent 301 redirect. Avoid redirecting every removed page to the homepage.
Protect content and search intent
Visual redesigns sometimes reduce useful text in pursuit of minimalism. Review why each page ranks before shortening or combining it. Preserve valuable answers, proof, internal links and topic coverage while improving clarity. A page should continue satisfying the intent behind the searches that bring qualified visitors.
Technical pre-launch checks
- Confirm staging pages cannot be indexed and remove restrictions at launch.
- Use one canonical HTTPS hostname consistently.
- Test titles, descriptions, headings and canonical tags.
- Validate structured data and ensure navigation is crawlable without JavaScript.
- Check mobile layouts, accessibility and Core Web Vitals.
- Generate an accurate XML sitemap containing only canonical indexable URLs.
- Create a useful 404 page and remove broken internal links.
Launch-day migration checks
Deploy redirects at the same time as the new website. Test representative old URLs, submit the new sitemap and inspect important pages in Search Console. Confirm analytics, consent handling, forms, telephone links and e-commerce tracking are working. Server logs can reveal crawler errors that browser testing misses.
Monitor after launch
Temporary movement is normal while search engines recrawl a changed site. Monitor indexing, crawl errors, impressions, clicks and conversions over several weeks. Investigate patterns rather than reacting to one daily ranking check. Repair redirect chains, unexpected noindex tags, missing content and performance regressions promptly.
Keep the URL inventory and redirect map. They are essential for diagnosing old backlinks, customer bookmarks and overlooked landing pages.
Plan SEO with the redesign
Migration work is most effective when included during discovery, content planning and development—not added immediately before launch. Evolvenet combines website design with technical SEO to build the new experience while protecting the value of the existing one.
